Security Roles

Security Roles

Security roles provide access to specific functionality within each Online System. Having an account does not provide you with full access to an Online System. You still need to obtain the required security role(s).

Do all Online Systems require security roles?

All Online Systems require one or more security roles except eLibrary, Petrinex and Legacy Well Lookup & Data Downloads.

Can a security role apply to more than one Online System?

Yes. See the available security roles and what Online System(s) they pertain to in the Determining what security roles you need section below.

Who can add a security role to my account?

Company Administrators can grant most security roles. There are a few exceptions though. For a complete listing of who can grant which security role please see the Determining what security roles you need section below.

Company Administrators

Company Administrators

A Company Administrator is an individual who holds the authority to manage user access to Online Systems on behalf of an organization. A Company Administrator can manage an individual's:

  • association to their organization, and
  • the security roles they are granted.

I do not know who the Company Administrator is for my organization

If you need a Company Administrator to associate your account to their organization or grant your account security roles and do not know who to contact please let us know by filling out the form at the bottom of this page.

The Company Administrator for my organization is unavailable

Where a Company Administrator is temporarily unavailable, please inquire within their organization about having temporary alternate Company Administrator assigned in their absence.

Where a Company Administrator is otherwise unavailable (for example, the organization that the Company Administrator is acting of behalf of no longer exists), please fill out the form at the bottom of this page and a member of our Online Systems support team will be able to assist you.

How do I become a Company Administrator?

If no existing Company Administrator exists for your organization:

1. Create Online Systems account if you don't already have one. See the Creating your account section above for guidance if needed.

2. Submit an application on behalf of your organization through Petrinex indicating you want to become a Company Administrator.

3. E-mail your Petrinex approval to servicedesk@bc-er.ca

4. A member of our Online Systems support team will review the Petrinex approval and grant the Company Admin security role on your behalf.

If an existing Company Administrator exists for your organization:

1. Have the existing Company Administrator assign the Company Administrator security role permission to the required user.

Can multiple users act as Company Administrators for an organization?

Yes. Multiple individuals may act as a Company Administrator for an organization but an individual cannot act as a Company Administrator for more than one organization. We recommend limiting the number of Company Administrators for an organization at any time to no more than two (2) though.

What happens when I become a Company Administrator?

As a Company Administrator you will now have access to do the following in KERMIT:

  • view the details of your organization,
  • create an account for a user,
  • add or remove a user from your organization,
  • manage the organization a user’s account is associated with,
  • manage security roles for a user, and
  • update the details of a user’s account.

For detailed guidance on how to carry out the above activities in KERMIT please refer to the Company Administrator Guide.

What security roles can I grant as a Company Administrator?

Please see the Determining what security roles you need section above for a complete listing of the security roles that can be granted by a Company Administrator.

Best practices as a Company Administrator

For security purposes, we recommend adhering to the following best practices as a Company Administrator:

  • promptly revoking all security roles from, and removing your organization's association with, any individual that leaves your organization, and
  • incorporating regular evaluations of users associated to your organization and the security roles they hold.
